The Tools to Begin: Fiction Writing for Beginners
Event description
Focusing on both ideas and techniques, Tools to Begin is designed to give over twenty-fives, who want to write fiction but have not yet begun, a foundation for developing the confidence to communicate their thoughts through writing.
Want to write fiction but past high school and uni groups? Feel you have something to say but it’s hard to get it together? Ideas into plots? The right words? Will anyone take it seriously other than friends? Family? The dog? Everyone knows ‘the hardest sentence you will ever write is the first one’. In this three-month course you will be given (and get to practice) fiction’s basic tools in an atmosphere that gives you hands on experience and plenty of low-key, constructive feedback. What’s more, these tools will support you as you continue to grow as a writer.
Tools to Begin is facilitated by experienced writing teacher and published author Dr Rosemary Montgomery. It offers not just ‘the first sentence’, but a foundation for your fiction writing.
The course will be run fortnightly at the Wollongong Library Theatrette.
Dates: 1 Oct, 15 Oct, 29 Oct, 12 Nov, 26 Nov, 10 Dec.
Dr Rosemary Montgomery is an internationally published academic author whose Ph.D. thesis won a place in Picador’s ‘Thesis to Book’ program. She has also successfully supported and edited first time fiction writers.
