FIELD TRIP | Hand-building with Barwon Heads artist Kim Drew
Event description
This field trip allows you to experience intuitive hand-building techniques in a natural setting.
Kim Drew is a ceramic artist based on the Bellarine Peninsula, originally from South Africa. Her work explores the primitive connection between clay, earth, and daily ritual, drawing from African traditions where the fire, home, and shared meals form the heart of community life. Grounded in ecological sustainability, she uses natural textures, organic forms, and traditional techniques to create tactile pieces that embody the coexistence of the spiritual and material. Through her practice, Drew engages in an evolving dialogue with The Earth, celebrating the beauty of simplicity, connection, and the handmade.
Kim Drew is an exhibiting artist in our current exhibition, Sympoiesis, running until April 17 in Gallery One.
Join artist Kim Drew for a pinch pot hand-building experience in her garden studio. The session begins with an introduction to materials, tools, and creative processes, followed by a demonstration of the pinch pot technique. Participants will then have time to create their own pieces with Kim’s guidance in a relaxed and inspiring setting. This workshop is designed as an opportunity to slow down, engage with clay, and explore creativity in a hands-on way.
A minibus will take participants to Kim Drew's ceramic studio in Barwon Heads. Participants are also welcome to join us at the location. The address will be shared closer to the workshop date.

Field Trip is a series of encounters where participants join presenting artists on location, often traveling together from Platform Arts as a meeting point. It forges collaborative intergenerational connections, where artists share their site-based practice and speak to the importance of place in their work and self.
Platform Arts acknowledges that Field Trip takes place on the unceded lands of the Wadawurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We recognise their language, art and culture, and acknowledge their people as the first artists and Custodians of this land. We pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and extend these respects to all First Nations people and their Elders, past, present and emerging.
This project has been supported by a City of Greater Geelong Community Grant.
