The way we consume information has changed dramatically in the last few decades. Self-publishing and social media mean that false or misleading information can be created and shared incredibly fast, seen by thousands before anyone has even stopped to ask if it’s true.

ActionAid has partnered with Women’s Agenda to let you hear from diverse women who are leading climate action in Australia and around the world.

The fourth event in our webinar series will host a panel of media experts to explore the topic of fake news and discuss how women can use the media as a tool to lead the fight against misinformation and climate denialism.

Facilitated by Women’s Agenda Founding Editor, Angela Priestley, we will be joined by three experts in the field: MediaScope advisor Denise Shrivell, climate change psychology researcher, Belinda Xie and Sharon Bhagwan Rolls who leads ActionAid’s Pacific partner, the Shifting the Power Coalition.

Denise Shrivell has been actively involved, in the advertising, media and publishing industry in Australia and overseas for over 30 years. She now runs MediaScope and is a leading commentator on issues such as Australia’s internet and its impact, the media ownership landscape and ethical advertising. She has a particularly interest in the spread of false information through social media platforms.

Belinda Xie is a third-year PhD student in the School of Psychology at UNSW. Her PhD research primarily explores how people reason with evidence, specifically in relation to climate change. Her research will use insights from the Cognitive & Decision Sciences field to improve the way we understand climate change and solutions. Belinda will use findings from her research to inform climate change solutions.

Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls is a second-generation Fiji Island feminist working on the intersection of gender, media, communications and peace. She is currently a Technical Adviser to the Shifting the Power Coalition, which supports Pacific women's leadership in responding to climate change and disasters. Following a career in mainstream broadcasting, she co-founded FemLINKPacific and pioneered Women's Weather Watch, which is supporting Pacific women to lead climate action through SMS and communications platforms.
