FILM SCREENING AND KŌRERO WITH OTHER CINEMAS
Description
Join us for a free screening of The Park (Dancing on the Rubble of Empire) (2026) by Other Cinemas, with filmmakers Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah.
Centred on the filmmakers’ local park, the film brings together documentary, archive and direct animation to explore the colonial remnants in our everyday lives. It asks what it means to celebrate, play and belong amid the rubble of empire.
After the screening, stay for light kai, inu and informal kōrero with Arwa and Turab.
The screening coincides with Arwa and Turab’s latest exhibition, Unseen. Unheard. Unarchived., at Enjoy Contemporary Art Space from 7 November to 19 December. Curated by Hana Pera Aoake, the exhibition also features work by students from the Other Cinemas filmmaking programme and artists connected to Aotearoa. Explore the exhibition at Enjoy.
About the filmmakers
Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah are an artist duo based in London. Their work focuses on gathering people together to talk, learn and create films. They established Other Cinemas in 2019, hosting community screenings and discussions alongside a film school for Black and non-white communities.
Their films explore environmental harm, displacement and other legacies of colonialism, alongside questions of justice and how marginalised communities create spaces for resistance and alternative ways of being.
Their work has been exhibited at LUX, Humber Street Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery and the Brent Biennial ’22. Their films have screened at CPH, Dokufest and Hot Docs, and received Best Short Documentary awards at BlackStar Film Festival in 2024 and London Short Film Festival in 2025. In 2025, they were shortlisted for the Film London Jarman Award.
