Join us for an exclusive screening of Before 1770 to mark the conclusion of our current Perth Festival exhibition, A call and response across the ocean.

Before 1770 delves into themes of transglobal colonisation and cultural memory presented throughout A call and response across the ocean, offering a powerful perspective on the historical friendships and kin ties between northern Australia and Makassar.

For centuries before European settlement, the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land and the Makassan Muslims from Sulawesi forged a bond through trade, language, and family ties. Before 1770 explores this tapestry of cultural exchange, showcasing journeys, rituals, and relationships that redefine Australia’s history and offer a new perspective on identity and belonging.

Through vivid storytelling and immersive re-enactments, Before 1770 sheds light on a remarkable narrative of collaboration. It challenges colonial myths by celebrating the rich and enduring relationship between Aboriginal Australians and Makassan Muslims.
