SPECIAL Pre-Vote Film Screening - Our Voice Our Heart
Event description
First Peoples’ voices have been heard across Country for thousands of years. When we think about the voices that have shaped our own lives, we understand the lasting impact they have on our future.
On October 14, Australians will come together to make a collective decision, one that will have ripple effects across generations. The Referendum will be a binary vote (yes or no), but community-based conversations don’t need to be polarising and stuck. How can we embrace the rising energy for change with new opportunities, while learning from past mistakes and building upon what we already have?
Before the referrendum, in Euro Yuroke / St Kilda (Boonwurrung & Bunurong Country), we’re helping to create a space for community to come together in an open and inclusive forum. Regardless of how you plan to vote, or if you’re still not sure, it will be an opportunity to listen, share and become more informed.
Come along and be part of the conversation!
What to expect?
Our gathering will start at dusk with an Acknowledgement of Country then we’ll step inside to watch a screening of ‘Our Voice, Our Heart’, an inspiring film of two Indigenous young men exploring the significance of the Voice to Parliament. Following the film, we'll open out into small ‘yarning circles’ which will allow all participants to get involved. Hosting will be shared by Matt Sykes (Regeneration Projects) & Maroushka Saldanha (Regen Melbourne)
Drinks and light snacks will be provided.
OUR VOICE, OUR HEART Synopsis
The sun-drenched landscapes of the Northern Territory form the backdrop for a politically neutral, storytelling approach aimed at fostering learning and connection between Indigenous Australian communities and urban Australians. Our documentary chronicles the transformative journey of two First Nations men, Jaxon De Santis and Justin Grant, as they grapple with their uncertainty about the impending Voice to Parliament referendum.
Motivated by the glaring knowledge gap between urban dwellers and remote Indigenous communities, Jaxon and Justin embark on a journey to understand the perspectives of those who will be most affected by the referendum. Their quest is not only to find their own voices but also to empower others to do the same.
It is an open invitation to embark on a shared journey of understanding, guided by the wisdom and experiences of diverse First Nations communities across the NT.
