Film Screening: Sherpa (Documentary)
Description
Sherpa is set in Nepal and focuses on the people who do the vital, yet often underappreciated work of setting up routes and camps, and guiding tourists up mountains. The film reveals the human element behind the expeditions, showing their culture, spirituality, and the economic realities of their work. In 2014 there was a deadly avalanche on Mount Everest that killed many Sherpa, which led to the rest uniting to halt the climbing season. This was met with insensitivity from some foreign operators. Ultimately, Sherpa is a moving account of people fighting for dignity and the stark contrast between the commercialisation of Everest and the human cost of that industry.
