Films for Frockistas #6 - Bill Cunningham New York

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Sixth in a series of Sunday arvo get togethers to watch documentaries and talk frocks, fabrics and fashion for people who love to sew and other fabric appreciators.

On Sunday 5th June we'll be screening Bill Cunningham New York (2010) directed by Richard Press

The reluctant star of New York's fashion scene

“We all get dressed for Bill,” says Vogue editrix Anna Wintour. The “Bill” in question is 80+ New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham. For decades, this Schwinn-riding cultural anthropologist has been obsessively and inventively chronicling fashion trends and high society charity soirées for the Times Style section in his columns “On the Street” and “Evening Hours”. Documenting uptown fixtures (Wintour, Tom Wolfe, Brooke Astor, David Rockefeller—who all appear in the film out of their love for Bill), downtown eccentrics and everyone in between, Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and individual flair.

About the film:

"It's a charming, loving, witty portrait of the life and work of a delightful, kind man. He's a figure of probity in a corrupt, ruthless world of poseurs, mildly camp but essentially unaffected. Genuinely in love with clothes, Cunningham makes you think of fashion in a more positive and enlightened way." The Guardian
