Over this eight-week masterclass, Miles Franklin Award-winning author Sofie Laguna will guide participants through the process of finding a character’s voice. She believes that voice – the way a character/narrator expresses themselves – is the key to unlocking the stories they want to tell. Engaging a unique and individual voice helps writers to meet every challenge their novels present. It can reveal plot, set tone, generate dramatic tension, and build emotional depth. In Sofie’s experience it is voice that provides the fun; it can set a writer free.

Each week, using a combination of class discussion, writing exercises, and text-analysis, Sofie will examine a different element of the novel through the lens of a character’s voice. Participants will discover that immersion in this voice can make the process of writing a novel both liberating and rewarding. It helps writers complete their work.

Sofie was originally trained as an actor, and her workshops are fun, lively, and dynamic.
