Affinity Initiative Aotearoa PGM CRAG DAY
Description
The rope goes up. You follow. π§
PGM CRAG DAY is Affinity's outdoor roped climbing session β a guided introduction to climbing on real rock with ropes, in the company of your community. Designed for beginners and those new to outdoor climbing, this is where gym confidence meets mountain air.
Roped climbing opens up a completely different dimension of the outdoors.

FAQs
- What is top-rope climbing?
Top-rope climbing means the rope runs from you, up through an anchor at the top of the route, and back down to your belayer.
It's the safest and most beginner-friendly form of roped climbing β if you fall, you drop only a short distance before the rope catches you.
- What is belaying?
Belaying is managing the rope for your climbing partner.
Your guides will demonstrate and supervise all belaying on the day.
You will not be asked to belay independently unless you are already trained and signed off.
- Do I need any experience?
Prior experience is helpful but not required. If you do feel like you want to have a 'safer' experience for entry into climbing, you can join us on our Monday Club Nights at The Adventure Centre from 6pm onwards.
The session is designed for beginners and those new to outdoor roped climbing.
Your guides will walk you through everything before you leave the ground.
- Do I need my own gear?
No.Harnesses, helmets, climbing shoes, and ropes are available to rent.
You are allowed to bring your own gear, which you will be in charge of and you'll be responsible to know how to use your own gear.
Details on gear rental will be confirmed in your booking confirmation.
- How fit do I need to be?
A reasonable level of general fitness is recommended.
The approach to the crag may involve a short walk on uneven terrain.
If you have any concerns about fitness or mobility, get in touch before the event.
- What should I wear?
Flexible, comfortable clothing you can move freely in.Avoid jeans or restrictive clothing.
Bring layers β outdoor conditions can change quickly.

Yes.

- Can I bring a friend?
Your friend is welcome β they just need to register as an Affinity member first, and book in a ticket on their own because we use this platform as an administrative management of head count and rentals.
Membership is free and takes only a minute.
- Is there a minimum age requirement?
Please get in touch if you have questions about age suitability.
Normally, we do not allow children under the age of 16 to be at our events, unless they have been arranged or have experience prior.
Our events are community-oriented, but not run as exposure experiences for children. Parents who have children along will be solely in charge of the management of their children, and not affect the running of the sessions.
We just want to make sure every participant has the right experience on the day.
