Knowing where to begin can be overwhelming when planning a renovation, or considering a new build. Making smart choices from the very beginning will not only save time and money, but will also allow for the most sustainable approach. In this session, we’ll start at square one by detailing the most important things to consider when building or renovating a sustainable home, as well as hear a panel discussion and Q&A session with experts.

Please note that this session will start at 6:30pm (AEDT) and end between 8 - 8:30pm (AEDT), depending on audience questions. The session will be recorded and sent out to registered participants.

Speakers

Liam Wallis, HIP V. HYPE

Liam is the Founder and Managing Director of HIP V. HYPE. Trained in Architecture and Urban Design and following over a decade of private sector property development experience, Liam founded HIP V. HYPE in 2015 to influence and build the more equitable, resilient and prosperous future we deserve. Liam ensures the alignment of activities across the group of HIP V. HYPE business, providing strategic advice to the leadership teams and guiding delivery of HIP V. HYPE’s multi ward winning development projects. He is a strong advocate for better outcomes in our built environment, participating in advisory panels and discussions to support the sustainable growth of our cities and regions. Liam established the successful Hypecast podcast and Collective Exchange, an in-person talk series, to facilitate more effective action on climate change. Liam is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Jane Hilliard, Designful

Jane Hilliard of Designful in Hobart, a practice that specialises in environmentally sound small builds. Designful’s approach to energy efficiency and sustainability is based around balance: “We believe that the core of sustainability is in finding the right balance between values, size, resource use, environmental impact, financial impact and wellbeing.”

Sophia MacRae, Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water

Sophia's current role is with the Commercial Building Policy Section within the Energy Division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water, where she works to improve energy efficiency outcomes for existing and new commercial buildings in jurisdictions across Australia.

Sophia is very familiar with multiple sectors and intersections of policy, planning, and property development, in the context of Victorian regional and metropolitan local government.

Host - Anna Cumming

Anna Cumming is a writer and editor who has held a variety of communications roles at Renew since 2010. In 2019 she took over as Managing Editor of 'Sanctuary: modern green homes' - Australia's premier magazine dedicated to sustainable house design.
