First Tuesday Club: Managing Youth Crime with Simon Denny

This event has passed Get Tickets

Event description

Youth Crime in Brisbane and all over the country has been in the news constantly for 12 months with the Premier backtracking on bail detention rules on Feb 21.   But what is the origin of this malaise and what can we do about it?  Lock 'em up and throw away the key? Or appreciate the former Jails Boss Keith Hamburger's statement that we can't "punish our way out of this".

Associate Professor Simon Denny is an Adolescent and Young Adult Physician who is the Director of the Mater Young Adult Health Centre. He has published extensively on youth health issues in New Zealand and internationally.  He is the current chair of the Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Committee for the RACP. He brings a clinical and epidemiological focus on youth health issues, especially around risk taking behaviours and wellbeing.

We look forward to Simon's perspective on this difficult issue.

First Tuesday Club General

Light food and drinks available throughout around the big table. Arrive from 5.30pm to meet and catch up with TBD people (active volunteers, supporters, partners, sponsors and previous speakers). Guests are free to leave from 7pm but the discussion always continues. Usual location to be detailed on confirmation emails.

Attendance is normally limited to 14 people which is about the maximum for everyone to have a say and maintain a single discussion. Discussions are not recorded and of course The Brisbane Rule applies. In some cases, the Chatham House Rule may be invoked. The Principle of Charity is a good one to bear in mind. First Tuesday provides a safe space for free speech from differing perspectives.

"Pay forward or what you can afford" to keep FTC self-sustaining and contributing a little to The Brisbane Dialogues, with student and young grad volunteers and interns (and former speakers and valued sponsors) very welcome to enjoy a freebie.

Note that FTC is a private series for active volunteers, interns, supporters and partners of The Brisbane Dialogues. Email us if you would like to be actively involved, or would like to bring a guest who is interested.

If you book a place but cannot make it, please email us so we can re-offer your place, as there is often a waiting list. Conversely, it is a good idea to your name on the waiting list in the Humanitix system if the event is showing "sold out".
