Fish Island Book Supper Club - November
Book Supper Club - SEVEN MOONS OF MAALI ALMEIDA
For this month's Fish Island Book Supper Club we are reading The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka.
Colombo, 1990: Maali Almeida, war photographer, gambler and closeted gay man, wakes up dead in what looks a lot like a celestial visa office. His body is sinking in Beira Lake, he can’t remember how it got there, and the list of suspects is long. He has seven moons to contact the man and woman he loves most and lead them to the photos that will rock Sri Lanka.
Part murder mystery, part ghost story, part savage political satire, the novel is set at the height of Sri Lanka’s civil war and asks who gets to tell a country’s story, and whether anything we value in life outlasts us.
On brand for our book supper club this book is darkly funny and shines a light on a history unfamiliar to many of us. Karunatilaka won the 2022 Booker Prize for this novel, and we can't wait for his new book coming out next year.
