For this month's Fish Island Book Supper Club we are reading Dream Count by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Chiamaka is a Nigerian travel writer living in America, grounded by the pandemic and taking stock of every man she has loved and every life she might have led. Around her are three other women: Zikora, her best friend, a high-flying lawyer left alone just when she needs support most; Omelogor, her fearless cousin, a banker in Abuja who has quietly bent the rules for a cause of her own; and Kadiatou, her housekeeper from Guinea, whose life is upended by an assault at the hotel where she works, and by everything that follows (inspired by a true story).

Moving between Nigeria and the US during the strange, suspended time of lockdown, Dream Count asks what women are owed by love, work, family and justice, and what happens when a life doesn't match the one you dreamed of.

Adichie's first novel since Americanah (another of our favourites), more than a decade in the making, it was longlisted for the 2025 Women's Prize for Fiction, which she won with Half of a Yellow Sun.
