Michalis Krokos, a washed-up writer, part-time philosopher, full-time fixture of the Athens night, is in no hurry to write his next book. He’d rather livestream the Johnny Depp trial. Then a prosecutor turns up with news that an old friend, Rebecca, is in trouble: a violent far-right outfit wants her silenced, and Krokos is the one asked to go in undercover as their in-house fabricator of fake news. Write a few lies, steal a few secrets, take down a fascist or two. What could go wrong?

Plenty, obviously. Deepfake is literary noir with its tongue firmly in its cheek. A darkly funny dive through blackmail, backroom politics and the theatre of a post-truth world, set in a sweltering, sleepless Athens. It’s the first of Malafekas’s Krokos novels to reach English, in a translation by Jenny Steel for Foundry Editions, and it’s currently a Service95 Book Club pick. Translated, queer, anti-fascist and very funny with it — exactly our kind of book!
