Fizzy Ferments: Making Water Kefir with Amy Yalland (March 2024)
Event description
WATER KEFIR
with AMY YALLAND
Saturday 16 March 2024 - 2pm to 3.30pm
Water
kefir! The perfect summer drink. Learn how to make a yummy, fizzy,
probiotic, inexpensive, naturally low-in-sugar, soda-like drink (it’s a
bit like kombucha). Get a happy gut, happy children, less boring drink
options, less bottles in the recycling system, and that irreplaceable
satisfaction from making your own.
Join us at Kelmarna Community farm for a water kefir making workshop with local expert Amy Yalland, where you will get your own water kefir grains to take home so you can start making refreshing probiotic drinks for your family and friends this summer!
So what is Water Kefir? Water kefir is a sweet, fizzy, fermented beverage that many speculate originated in Mexico where thrived in the sugary water of the Ountia (prickly pear) cactus.
Water Kefir is much faster and easier to make than kombucha, so is perfect for beginners to fermentation. It’s sweeter to taste than kombucha—so is kid approved!—but is very low in sugar so is well-tolerated by many diabetics (unlike regular soda pop or tonic water). It has a larger spectrum of probiotics than kombucha or yoghurt so is great for your gut and for maintaining a healthy flora balance. And it’s much cheaper to make water kefir at home than buying kombucha at the supermarket every week.
What to expect:
Authentic water kefir can only be made by using live kefir grains, which Amy has been cultivating a stash of to share with workshop participants. When you come to this weekend workshop, you’ll be given your own grains, be walked through the kefir preparation, be taught the method to make it yourself, and how to store the grains when not in use. All you’ll need is a large clean glass jar, an open mind, and Amy will provide the grains, method and encouragement.
Tickets include: Guided instruction, a kefir grains starter, and access to all equipment required for practical activities (you must provide your own jar).
What to bring:
Essential:
- a large clean wide necked jar with a lid (for practical activities)
- a refillable water bottle (to stay hydrated)
Recommended:
- a notebook and pen (to take notes)
- weather appropriate gear (to keep comfortable)
At Kelmarna, we strive to make education accessible for everyone. So, where possible, we offer a 35% discount on our workshops to valid Community Services Card holders.
