PSU Guitar Series is thrilled to welcome flamenco guitar master Antonio Rey, one of the leading flamenco guitarists of Spain today. After a full house at his last show in Portland, he will be performing a concert once again at The Old Church. Antonio was awarded the 2020 Latin Grammy for best flamenco album entitled Flamenco sin Fronteras featuring several collaborations with top artists in Spain including Pablo Alborán. Rey's playing, known for his impeccable technique and fiery interpretations of flamenco's intricate rhythms, has been described by El País as “more than brilliant”, “excellent” by The Guardian and “the next Paco de Lucia” by Julio Martí.

This will be the first flamenco guitarist ever to play on the series and a rare opportunity to see one of the top living flamenco guitarists here in Portland. The show will also feature a special appearance of Portland's own Seffarine.

In addition to this performance there will be a masterclass/workshop preceding the concert in PSU’s School of Music and Theater. This will be an incredible opportunity for students of the guitar to learn flamenco techniques, form and falsetas.

About the Artist:

Antonio Rey was born in Madrid to a family deep in flamenco tradition and his career began at the age of ten alongside his father, also a flamenco guitarist. He was soon performing on international stages and winning prestigious awards for his incredible virtuosity, such as the Premio Nacional de Guitarra (also won by Paco de Lucia and Vicente Amigo), National Competition of the Art of Flamenco of Córdoba, Niño Ricardo National Competition of Flamenco Guitar, International Flamenco Guitar Competition of Jerez and others. He has performed with many of the most important flamenco artists, such as the late great Paco de Lucia, Grammy winning vocalist Diego El Cigala, dancer Joaquín Cortes, guitarist Diego del Morao, Grammy nominee Estrella Morente, and has recently been touring with bass legend Richard Bona. Rey has performed in prestigious concert halls around the world including Tokyo, Moscow, Tehran and across Latin America and Europe.

About the PSU Guitar Series:

The PSU Guitar Series provides concerts, workshops & masterclasses of distinguished artists for the benefit of our student body and the larger Portland community. Located in the hub of Portland’s cultural district, this annual series is a focal point for guitar activity in the metro area and the Pacific Northwest. Through the generous support of Portland State University, the PSU Foundation, Portland Guitar Society, and community members alike, this series revives a tradition which previously lasted for 17 years and aims to continue it for many years to come. The series is led by Artistic Director Mario Díaz.

Since its founding, the series has brought legendary performers and teachers to Portland, including: David Russell, The Assad Brothers, Dusan Bogdanovic, Paul O’Dette, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Ana Vidovic, Ralph Towner, Martha Masters, Paul Galbraith, William Kanengiser, and Manuel Barrueco.

In addition to a featured concert the guest artists will provide a masterclass or workshop at PSU. These masterclasses are provided as a service to the community in partnership with the PSU Guitar Program. For more info please visit www.psuguitarseries.org.
