The Peninsula Bushwalking Club invites you to join them on a walk from Flinders to Shoreham Return. This walk is part of the Try Bushwalking Month, celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Bushwalking Victoria, the peak body representing 60+ bushwalking clubs across Victoria.

Join the Peninsula Bushwalking Club on a return beach walk. The walk is on firm sand with some seaweed and easy rock hopping. Our club is about enjoying the experience, immersing ourselves in nature and meeting new friends with similar interests.

DISTANCE:  Approximately 12km return walk that will take 4 hours.

WHO IS THIS WALK FOR?  This walk is perfect for people who enjoy bushwalking and who are comfortable heading out for a 12 km walk on uneven terrain, including a steep start.

CHILDREN AND PETS: This walk is for adults 18 years and over, and due to the nature of the walk, we ask you to leave dogs and other pets at home. Please contact the club directly to inquire about service animals, and any family or pet friendly walks.

AWT GRADE 3 (Easy): Suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Grade 3 tracks may have short steep sections, a rough surface and many steps.  AWT Grade information.

PACE: Steady with stops and morning tea at Shoreham (midpoint).

TOTAL ASCENT: 145 steps.

WALK DESCRIPTION:

The walk starts up 145 steep steps in about 10 sections to The Esplanade, with a grassy walk along the side, passing the Bass & Flinders monument (built in 1912) and both world war memorials, then down a sandy track to the beach. With a low tide, there is then about 5km of beach walking on hard sand to Shoreham, often covered with seaweed, with some easy rock hopping. At the start there are a couple of beautiful gardens on the downhill slope from elevated houses to the beach. We will also pass some stunning mansions on the clifftops, with superb views to Phillip Island and see many water birds looking for food on the beach and in the seaweed. We may even see a seal if we’re lucky! We should arrive at the Shoreham beach carpark and picnic area with toilets before 10:30 for our morning tea break. We then retrace our steps along about 6km of beach back to the Flinders Pier for lunch, making a total of about 11km of easy beach walking. Before heading home, we can have a coffee, at a café in the main street of Flinders.

MEETING POINT: Flinders Pier carpark, near the toilets - south of the pier. Please arrive at 8:45, 15 minutes before the start time of 9:00.

DIRECTIONS: Travel to Flinders, then along Cook Street towards the sea and follow The Esplanade south to the intersection with Lacey View, turn left and onto the Flinders Pier. Google Map.

NOTE ON PARKING: The trial paid parking at Flinders Pier Foreshore carpark ends on 14 September. Visitors and Mornington Peninsula residents do not have to pay or obtain e-permits but please observe the signs indicating how long you may park there.

ABOUT OUR CLUB: The Peninsula Bushwalking Club is based on the Mornington Peninsula. We have around 100 members and offer a variety of walks on weekends as well as mid-week, both on the Mornington Peninsula and further afield, generally within a 90-minute drive from Mornington. Walks are often followed by a cafe visit, where one is available nearby. We also offer bike rides, including e bikes, as well as multi-day base camps and back packs from time to time, catering for more experienced hikers, as well as those newer to hiking.
