Flowers & Leaves: Marigolds and Tea

A Natural Dyeing Workshop with Janessa Fortes Bautista

Sunday, September 13 | 10 AM-2 PM
Rhythm Seed Farm | 8 participant minimum

Spend a late-summer day at Rhythm Seed Farm exploring the art and alchemy of natural dyeing with textile artist and natural dyer Janessa Fortes Bautista.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will dye a cotton tea towel and silk scarf using marigolds, tea, and shibori techniques. Janessa will also introduce the foundations of preparing textiles for natural dyes, including the basics of scouring and pre-mordanting, giving participants tools to continue experimenting with plant dyes at home.

Come curious and ready to create. Bring a notebook and all your questions about working with plants and natural color. No previous dyeing experience is necessary.

About Janessa Fortes Bautista

Janessa Fortes Bautista is a textile artist, clothing designer, natural dyer, and devoted plant ally. Her journey with natural dyeing began 25 years ago, sparked by a deep fascination with the vibrant pigments that can be coaxed from plants and insects—a sense of wonder that continues to inspire her today.

Although Janessa considers herself a lifelong student of the plants, she has spent many years sharing her knowledge through teaching. She believes dyeing and caring for textiles are essential, accessible skills, much like hemming pants or mending clothing. Her work encourages a mindful and sustainable relationship with clothing through repairing, modifying, and transforming what we already have.
