Red Canary Song invites community members and allies to a vigil honoring the eight lives lost in the Atlanta spa shootings on March 16, 2021. The event is taking place in person, outside Queens Public Library at Flushing (41-17 Main St), and will consist of speeches, music, and an altar created by Red Canary Song outreach organizers.

Pay your tribute to an altar dedicated to the victims; bring flowers, candles, and your loved ones. Build a moment of remembrance and solidarity by writing a message to hang by the altar. Let us gather to mourn and stand strong with one another. Together, we will reorient ourselves, overcome fear with love, and imagine beyond police-centered resolutions.

In light of the increased visibility of racist attacks against our Asian communities, we recognize that there is not enough space where first-generation, working-class migrants can name and process this violence. It is even more difficult for massage/sex workers who survive this kind of violence on a day-to-day basis. Therefore, this event is led by and catered to the safety needs and cultural understanding of monolingual Flushing residents and Asian migrant massage and sex workers.

SAFETY AND COMMUNITY CARE

We urge you to practice community care and wear masks for everyone’s safety.

We also ask that you be mindful of the space because this is a grief space. Vigils are sacred spaces. People handle and express grief differently, and we want to hold space for those possibilities while still having a safe event. We do not police other people’s behavior, and we ask that people who come to this space do not either. However, if you cause harm to others, you will be asked to leave.

Entry:
The entrance by Main St is staircase without a ramp. For a wheelchair accessible entrance, you may enter via Kissena Blvd.

Language Support:
All speeches will be delivered in Mandarin, Korean, and English. There will be on-site volunteers and organizers speaking Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese, and Spanish.

Location:
This event will be taking place in front of Queens Public Library at Flushing (41-17 Main St), which is wheelchair accessible.

*For a private bathroom, a volunteer can escort you to a nearby restaurant that agreed to our bathroom use during the vigil. (6 min walk)

We will have folding chairs for those to use as needed.
