FOA Hiking Series: Wildflowers of Albion Basin
Description
Join Biology and Geology professors from Utah Valley University on a moderate hike to explore wildflowers and other highlights of the Albion Basin around Alta Ski Resort. The hike will include many stops to explore flowers and plants, to seek wildlife, and to discuss the geologic setting of a “textbook” example of beautiful mountain scenery created by glaciers.
After the hike, join us for sandwiches and cookies, and please bring a reusable water bottle for drinks.
Plan to wear weather-appropriate clothes and sun protection, and bring food and water for the hike. Due to the nature of the hike and the in-depth topics about Alta's unique environment, we recommend that children not attend. However, there is no official age restriction, and participants of all ages are welcome if they feel comfortable with the hike level and discussion content.
Space is limited so RSVP is required. While attendance is free, we encourage donations to support ongoing efforts to protect Alta and preserve its beauty for generations to come. A suggested donation of $10 per person helps continue this important work. You can donate HERE

FAQs
- What if the weather is bad?
Staff will plan to let attendees know that the event is cancelled through your registration. We will also notify cancellation of the event due to weather on our social media accounts. Follow us for up to date information at @friendsofalta
- Are children allowed?
The hike is intended to be moderate. While we don’t explicitly exclude children, past experience shows that they often struggle to keep up with the group and may not fully grasp the educational discussions. If you believe your child can handle the hike and would enjoy the topics, they are welcome to join.
- Meet the Professors
Daniel Horns is a Professor of Geology and Dean of the College of Science at Utah Valley University. Dr. Horns earned a B.S. in Geophysics from UCLA and a Ph.D. in Geology from UC Davis.
Growing up in Michigan I was fascinated with plants. As an undergraduate at Northern Michigan University I took this fascination with plants and became a dedicated botanist. This allowed me to escalate my love of the natural world and set me off on a long road of natural history and ecological study. In my free time I enjoy bicycles, botany, and birding.
Josh Snyder:
As a Teaching Botany Lab Manager I support botany labs and teach botany, zoology, and general biology courses.
- What food will be provided after the hike?
Sandwiches and cookies will be provided to attendees for participating in this event. There will be an onsite water fountain to refill your reusable containers. Please feel free to bring other beverages or food you would like.
