Folks Presents…Short Films About Big Cities 2 - Daguerréotypes
Description
The Folks folks are back! For our first ever event beyond our native Brighton, we’re excited to be partnering with our friends at Finch Community Cinema to bring you another night of docs exploring THE BIG CITY - this time, featuring Agnes Varda’s 1976 doc Daguerréotypes.
Shot entirely just outside Varda’s front door on Paris’ rue Daguerre following the birth of her son, Daguerréotypes documents the street’s assortment of barbers and bakers, shopkeepers and salespeople - her types - as they go about their business. Rewarded for the uncynical empathy with which she depicts them, each relates their hopes, ambitions, failures and foibles seemingly with absolute openness, almost as though thinking aloud.
Most wonderful about Daguerréotypes to the young documentarian, however, is its instructive nature. On rewatches, what becomes so evident is how such a great many fascinating stories can be found just outside our doorstep - or in Varda's case, 90 metres outside her doorstep, which was exactly as long as the electrical cables powering her equipment would allow. It is an eternal reminder that the director need not necessarily find, nor invent, anything, but to allow themself to be found - provided, of course, that they have developed and preserved the essential talent for looking and listening.
Full programme to be announced soon.
Doors open 6:30pm. Screening starts 7pm.
As ever, Felix & Julie will be hanging around before and after for pints. We can’t wait to see you!
