Most financial evidence in local cases sits in bank statements, exchange records, and business filings that investigators were never trained to read. Cases get built on the arrest and the seizure while the money trail, the people moving it, and the assets that could be forfeited go untouched. Cryptocurrency and AI-generated identities widen that gap every year.

Following the Money gives deputies and detectives a working financial investigation toolkit they can use on their next case. Two days of practitioner-led instruction, facilitated peer discussion, and small-group exercises cover legal process, bank and BSA records, cryptocurrency tracing, network mapping, forfeiture, and responsible use of AI tools. The course builds on what participants already know, so there is no prerequisite coursework.

Hosted onsite by St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office on February 22 and 23, 2027, the course is taught by Master Detective Phillip Klimpel of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Day 1 builds the toolkit: financial records, legal process, and cryptocurrency tracing. Day 2 applies it through a case file discussion, network mapping, AI tools for investigators, and a capstone exercise in which small groups build a financial link chart from a scenario that begins with a small bank. Participants receive a workbook with sample bank records and tracing worksheets, a checklist of financial indicators, and a resource and contact list covering FinCEN, IRS-CI, HSI, and state financial crimes units. Participants are encouraged to bring a real or representative case.

What You Will Learn

Choose the right legal process, subpoena, grand jury subpoena, or search warrant, for each bank, exchange, or business records request.
Approach banks directly and use BSA reporting, including SAR and CTR data held by FinCEN, to build a subject’s financial profile.
Analyze bank records for structuring, layering, and third-party control of accounts, then turn raw records into link analysis charts.
Understand what is and is not traceable on a blockchain, and where cryptocurrency exposure shows up in bank and exchange records.
Complete a hands-on tracing exercise using a commercial blockchain analytics platform and open source tools, and recognize when a case needs additional platforms.
Seize and preserve digital assets with chain of custody intact, using the right legal process to obtain records and take the assets.
Evaluate a case file with peers to decide what to hand off to financial crimes or forfeiture units and what to keep developing.
Compare civil and criminal asset forfeiture under Louisiana law, including the timing decisions that protect the underlying case.
Map how front businesses, shell companies, money mules, and facilitators move proceeds, and connect accounts and entities to identify principals and forfeitable assets.
Use AI tools approved for secure government use to speed record review and report writing, with safeguards that protect the evidentiary record.

Who Should Attend Detectives and investigators from municipal police departments and sheriff’s offices who work narcotics, fraud, property crimes, organized crime, or general criminal investigations, along with supervisors and command staff who decide which cases get a financial component. Any agency that has seized cash, found unexplained deposits in a bank record, or run into a cryptocurrency wallet and had no one to follow it has the gap this course closes. Sending an investigator means your agency can request the right records the first time, protect the case when forfeiture timing matters, and hand off to financial crimes units, prosecutors, and federal partners with a cleaner file. There is no prerequisite coursework, and participants with varied experience in financial investigation benefit from the peer discussion.
