Price FREE Get tickets

Event description

Join us at Ōtākaro Orchard on Sunday 19th May, 2.30-4pm, to explore permaculture design systems in our central city rebuild in support of the Ako Ōtautahi learning days festival.

Come tour Ōtākaro Orchard and explore the 7 layers of a Food Forest canopy, with all its diverse and beneficial relationships; where we will investigate permaculture design and how lessons we learn from nature can be replicated in our built environment.

On a tour through the new Education hub and cafe we will discover how this building is being built with these permaculture principles; capturing maximum energy; harnessing it; storing it; and recycling it.

With a blue green roof and solar array, compost toilets, adobe mud brick for passive solar heating, infiltration swales and grey water recycling, this community driven project is a living learning hub for us and our children, and a precious asset for the coming centuries.

The workshop will be held outside at Ōtākaro Orchard Food forest and on a building site so please bring appropriate footwear and weather protection.

In the event of rain the workshop will be held within the building, bring an umbrella or rain jacket to tour the food forest. A compost toilet is onsite and public toilets are located at the Margret Mahy playground across the road.

Cost is a koha towards our community led project.
