Did you know that 15.9% of women with disability or a long-term health condition reported experiences of violence in the last 12 months, compared to 4.3% of people without disability? (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2016)

*This workshop is for workers in the Disability sector. If you work in the FDV sector, please visit the event named - For FDV workers: Family and Domestic Violence & Disability.*

Everyone has the right to live a life free from violence, however women and children with disability are at higher risk of experiencing family and domestic violence (FDV).

Patricia Giles Centre for Non-Violence has received funding from the Department of Communities to develop an intersectional approach to service delivery which supports women and children with intellectual or cognitive disability experiencing family and domestic violence. Disability and Family & Domestic Violence is a free three-hour workshop for people working in the disability sector which aims to increase the confidence and capacity of the disability sector to support positive outcomes for people experiencing violence.

Workshop learning outcomes:

  • A greater understanding of the intersection of FDV and disability.
  • An increased awareness of the unique ways people with disability may experience violence.
  • An increased understanding of the barriers to disclosing experiences of violence.
  • Information on how to respond to disclosures of violence and support people to safety plan.
  • Information about effective referral pathways and resources.

The workshop is facilitated by Patricia Giles Centre for Non-Violence.
