Foraged Natural Dyes and Needle Felting Workshop - Roots: Crafting Connections to Place
Event description
Reify acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional custodians of the lands and waterways in the area that the workshop and exhibition takes place. As we craft and discuss connections to land, environment and culture, please always consider the strong connection to land and waterways that continues to be an important part of First Nations connection to country and culture.
This workshop is a part of the Melbourne Design Week 2025 exhibition Roots: Crafting Connection to Place, a series of naturally dyed textiles by Reify and Child of Society, showcasing their explorations into how design and craft can be utilised to deepen our connection to place.
In this workshop participants will experiment with producing a variety of colours on different fibres and fabrics using foraged natural dyes. Using these materials, participants will be taught how to use needle felting as a surface embellishment technique and create their own sample piece. Each participant will take home a needle felting starter kit along with their range of naturally dyed materials and the needle felted piece they created during the workshop.
The workshop will be run and hosted by Reify (Eamonn Briggs). Their work uses foraged and found materials, approaching design with an ecocentric philosophy that positions the environment as a collaborator. Combining embellishment techniques such as embroidery and needle felting with fabrics dyed using hand foraged dyes, they create pieces that evoke the environment that they draw colour from.
What to Wear
Participants are required to wear protective clothing including closed-toe shoes. The workshop involves materials that may cause stains or mess so please wear items you don't mind getting dirty.
