Event description

On this Intro Class, Vitor and Aline will go over the basic steps used in Pé de serra - one of the dancing styles of Forró, and some openings and twists, along with the importance of musicality and connection during the dance.

Forró originated in the northeastern region of Brazil, particularly in states like Pernambuco, Paraíba, and Ceará. Its roots trace back to the early 20th century, blending European folk influences—like the accordion and polka—with Afro-Brazilian rhythms and Indigenous musical traditions. The genre was popularized by artists such as Luiz Gonzaga, often called the "King of Baião," who brought forró to national attention in the 1940s and 1950s. His music, which included styles like baião, xote, and arrasta-pé, captured the spirit of rural life and the struggles of the sertanejo (northeastern backcountry people), making forró a symbol of cultural identity and resilience.

Over time, forró evolved and spread across Brazil, especially during the 1980s and 1990s when urban migration brought northeasterners to cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Today, forró is celebrated nationwide and internationally, with festivals, dance schools, and bands keeping its vibrant energy alive. Its infectious rhythm and inclusive dance style have made it a beloved part of Brazilian culture, transcending regional boundaries and gaining fans around the world.
