This course is 1.5 days: Monday 9 September, 8.30 – 4.00pm and Tuesday 10 September, 8.30 – 1.00pm. Participants must attend both days.

SHQ offers high quality, evidence based clinical training for doctors and medical students wanting to build skill and confidence in providing sexual health care and contraception.


This 1.5-day course is recommended for:

  • Prospective GP Registrars
  • GP Registrars
  • Doctors whose basic medical training did not include skill development in sexual health
  • Medical students in the final two years of their course


Course participants will have the opportunity to develop skills in providing respectful and non-judgemental sexual and reproductive healthcare through a combination of scenario-based learning, presentations, group discussion and skills practice.


Topics covered include:

  • Taking sexual histories
  • STIs – including managing a positive result
  • LGBTIQA+ sexual health – including PrEP discussion and gender diversity
  • Syphilis diagnosis and treatment
  • Genital examination
  • Contraception discussion and provision


Please note: The course does not include:

  • Cervical Screening
  • Managing gynaecological issues
  • Breast problems
  • IUD skills
  • Managing menopause
  • Unintended pregnancy care
