Flinders Quartet brings Voices Between Worlds to Castlemaine in a rare and intimate collaboration with Ngiyampaa, Yuin, Bundjalung and Gumbaynggirr artist Eric Avery. Blending violin, voice and movement, Avery’s powerful new work Sacred Medicines unfolds as a deeply immersive journey through story, Country and connection.

Set within the warm, character-filled surrounds of the Northern Hotel, this performance offers a unique opportunity to experience Flinders Quartet up close, where the detail, nuance and physicality of the music come vividly to life.

Alongside this landmark collaboration, the program features Maurice Ravel’s luminous String Quartet and Nicole Brady’s Ricochet, creating a rich dialogue between past and present.

Eric Avery:
Kabi Marrawuy Mumbulla, is a violinist, vocalist dancer and composer from the Ngiyampaa, Yuin and Gumbangirr people of NSW. He works with his family’s custodial songs and his haunting compositions often feature him singing while playing violin, predominantly in the Ngiyampaa language.

Quickly gaining an international reputation, Eric has appeared alongside and in association with some of the greatest artists of our time, from Yo-Yo Ma to Tina Arena. He has commissions and performances booked with Camerata Queensland, Ensemble Offspring, the JACK Quartet, Marrugeku and several of Australia’s major orchestras. He was a 2021 Myer Creative Fellow.

Renowned for bringing a 21st-century lens to the masterworks of the string quartet canon, FQ has created groundbreaking interdisciplinary collaborations: “Behind Closed Doors” with Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre (a theatrical play exploring a quartet’s preparation of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden for a Wigmore Hall debut); “Shostakovich” with Richard Piper (a 75 minute Shostakovich quartet cycle inspired by Wendy Lesser’s book “Silenced Voices”); “Puck’s Dream” with Iain Graindage, Richard Piper, and Chris Moore (who played both viola and Puck); “Bartok My Father” with Richard Piper (exploring Peter Bartok’s relationship with his father through Bartok’s fifth string quartet); and most recently “The Mendelssohns” (unearthing the sibling relationship between Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn) with dramaturg Richard Piper and composer Bryony Marks. These and many other innovative projects have helped open the world of the string quartet to new and diverse audiences.
