A Body-Mind Centering® and Contemporary Dance Workshop

What conditions are required to engage with the vast scale between somatic exploration and hyper-performance?
In this 1- day workshop we will explore the luscious convergence between contemporary dance and Body-Mind Centering® and the ways in which they mutually inform each other.

With shared curiosity around somatic inquiry as a gateway to self- awareness, group cohesion and compositional improvisation, Noa and Jenni are developing a collaborative workshop format to explore how their respective somatic and choreographic practices intersect.

Foregrounding care, they seek to evolve what they think they know and are interested in supporting and provoking integrative/generative physical dialogue as a collective in a workshop experience.

We will investigate:

Solo practice, partnered explorations and moving as a collective
Impulse derived from internal and external stimuli
A compositional toolkit in relation to time, space and other bodies
Pathways for attuning with- and making articulate choices in response to the moment
Slow motion practice - increasing capacity for awareness

Cost: $150 Waged/$125 Partly Waged/ $100 Unwaged

This workshop is appropriate for professional dancers and performers wishing to enrich their practice, as well as anyone with an interest in movement training.

ABOUT JENNI LARGE & NOA ROTEM:

Jenni Large is based in Lutruwita/Tasmania and works as a dancer, teacher and award-winning choreographer across so-called Australia. Driven by the personal, political and transformative forces of embodiment, Jenni’s dancing practice incorporates objects and apparatus, endeavouring to meld experimental with entertaining. Alongside her contemporary dance sensibilities, Jenni is physically informed by Body-Mind Centering ® , yoga, pole/erotic dance, gymnastics and fitness culture. Conceptually, her body of work seeks to subvert relational narratives and analyse socio-political themes that impact women. Jenni has performed extensively throughout Australia and internationally with artists and companies including; Tasdance, Dancenorth, Legs On The Wall, GUTS Dance, SA Opera/Leigh Warren and Ashleigh Musk. She has presented her choreographic work at festivals and venues including; Mona Foma, Ten Days On The Island, Ohm Festival Brisbane Powerhouse, Dancehouse and Carriage Works both as an independent artist and through commissions from Sydney Dance Company, Australasian Dance Collective and the Keir Choreographic Award. Last year, Jenni was honoured to receive a Chloe Munro Fellowship and participate in Asia Link’s Singapore Arts Now exchange as a creative associate with Tasdance.

Noa Rotem is a a theatre and movement performer, director, facilitator and Somatic Movement Educator. She has worked and trained extensively in Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, France, the Philippines and New York City and is a graduate of the Soma School of Body-Mind Centering ® (Paris), HaKvutza School of Dance (Tel Aviv), University of Sydney and of the Actor’s College . In Australia, she has performed with and directed for companies such as NORPA, Canberra Theatre Centre, Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre, La Boite, Little Dove Theatre Art, BelcoArts and The Danger Ensemble. Overseas, she has worked with a large array of companies such as SITI Company (NYC), Meta Theatre (The Philippines), The Human Theatre (Israel), ISTA.

Noa has taught widely at a range of international professional companies (eg QLD Ballet, HK Academy of Performing Arts, QUT, University of Asia and The Pacific), secondary schools and youth companies . Noa's training includes Dance Improvisation, Body-Mind Centering®, The Viewpoints, The Suzuki Method of Actor Training, Contemporary dance, Authentic Movement, The Morris Technique, Butoh, Gaga, Contact Improvisation, Practical Aesthetics, The Meisner Technique, and Yoga.
