    Event description

    FRED MORRISON Live in Concert!

Scottish multi-instrumentalist and composer Fred Morrison is bringing his lively and adventurous musical style to Ottawa on May 9th!

Though born and raised near Glasgow it is the celebrated Gaelic piping tradition of his father’s native South Uist in the outer Hebrides that forms the bedrock of Fred’s intensely expressive, and uniquely adventurous style.

His outstanding technical prowess won him many top competition prizes while still at school, while being inspired by pioneering acts such as the Bothy Band, and the Tannahill Weavers. Although his first-love was the great Highland bagpipes, over the years his mastery expanded to encompass whistles, Scottish smallpipes, also known as reelpipes – Morrison being a pivotal populariser of this once-rare variety – and Irish uilleann pipes.

MACISAAC AND MACKENZIE will be opening for Fred!

Alexis MacIsaac and Calum MacKenzie are a wife and husband duo who have established a unique musical partnership that combines Cape Breton piano playing with a modern approach to Celtic fiddle. While Calum’s musical approach has been heavily influenced by his Hebridean roots and his native Cape Breton culture, Alexis’ playing is a multi-faceted harmonization of Irish, Scottish, and Cape Breton styles.
Their debut album, The Bay Street Sessions is a compilation of original and traditional compositions and arrangements which secured them a 2017 Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for traditional instrumental group of the year, and a 2018 East Coast Music Awards Nomination for Roots/Traditional Recording of the Year. The album is infused with centuries-old feeling and contemporary flair; their mutual love for music is articulated in each note and phrase from bow to key.

The Glengarry Pipe Band will kick off the evening with a short performance from the Grade 3 band.
