The Topic: Little People, Big Feelings
It's tough when young children are struggling with big emotions. Meltdowns, outbursts, and challenging behaviours can leave educators feeling lost and unsure how to help – but these behaviours usually stem from overwhelming feelings that children don't yet have the tools to manage. In this session, Dr Justin Coulson shares a practical guide for early years educators to help children understand and regulate their emotional world. When children build competence in this critical life skill, they become more confident, form healthier relationships, and enjoy better wellbeing.
It will explore:
• Why meltdowns and challenging behaviours are usually a sign of feelings children can't yet manage
• A five-step “emotion coaching” process, drawing on research from Dr John Gottman and the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence
• How to help children name, understand and regulate big emotions
• Building resilience, confidence and healthier relationships
• Practical strategies you can use in your room tomorrow
