Free Mapping Tools: Workshop for Land Managers & Citizen Scientists
Description
Banyula Conservation Reserve uses free mapping tools with great effect. Google Earth Pro and Avenza Maps are powerful, and can be used separately, or combined to work in the office and in the field as property management tools. Using Google Earth we can create simple maps and data points that can be used in desktop management, and converted to mobile maps for the field using Avenza Maps, which works totally offline. Conversely, we can record data from the field in Avenza and store it in a larger management project on Google Earth Pro.
This half day workshop will introduce you to ways you can use these free tools yourself for land management or citizen science purposes. We will cover the basics and some advanced uses of Google Earth Pro on your laptop and Avenza Maps on your phone or tablet.
You will leave knowing how to work with these on your own project.
For more complex work, we also use QGIS, a free open source geographic information system that works with a wide range of environmental data sets to analyze data and prepare detailed maps. This too can be integrated with Avenza and Google Earth Pro. We will introduce QGIS on the day as well.
