Free School for Farmworkers presents: Athletes In Overalls - Movement Health & Injury Prevention

Anyone who has farmed for a day, a week, a month, or a full season knows that farming is a MARATHON (maybe a series of marathons!), and not a sprint. When we look at farmwork through the lens of sport and athleticism, what changes for us? How does that impact our diet, our noticing in our bodies, our sleep hygiene, and our confidence in how we advocate for ourselves?

At the next Free School session, longtime farmer and farmworker, strength athlete, and personal trainer Cynthia Flores of Labor-Movement will discuss movement health and wellness for farmworkers from an athletic perspective. Cynthia asks: What does it mean to be a farmworker and an athlete? What is movement self-advocacy?

You can expect to learn tips on managing food, fluid, sleep, and stress for best performance over long days and the season. The discussion will focus on safe lifts using hinges and squats, reducing the potential of low back pain or injury, and moving and carrying loads.

There will be time for Q&A and discussion so bring your questions and experiences!

Facilitator bio: Cynthia Flores, owner and founder of Labor-Movement LLC, owned and operated a vegetable production for 20 years in western Maine, and turkey farmed for 12 holiday seasons. She has been a strength athlete for 12 years, and is a Certified Personal Trainer and Licensed Massage Therapist. Founded in 2020, Labor-Movement works with farmers and farmworkers in body mechanics and movement pattern training, with a goal of preventing injuries and extending career longevity. In 2024, Cynthia worked with over 900 farmers in 18 states and British Columbia.

Cuando vemos el trabajo agrícola a través del lente del deporte y el atletismo, ¿qué cambia para nosotres? ¿Cómo impacta eso en nuestre dieta, en cómo percibimos nuestre cuerpo, en nuestre higiene del sueño, en nuestre confianza para abogar por nosotres mismes?

En la próxima sesión de la Escuela Libre, la agricultora y trabajadora agrícola de larga trayectoria, atleta de fuerza y entrenadora personal, Cynthia Flores de Labor-Movement, hablará sobre la salud y el bienestar en el movimiento para les trabajadores agrícolas desde una perspectiva atlética. Cynthia pregunta: ¿Qué significa ser trabajadore agrícola y atlete? ¿Qué es la autodefensa en el movimiento?

Puedes esperar aprender consejos sobre cómo manejar la alimentación, la hidratación, el sueño y el estrés para un rendimiento óptimo durante largas jornadas y a lo largo de la temporada. Biografía de la Facilitadora: Cynthia Flores, propietaria y fundadora de Labor-Movement LLC, aporta una gran experiencia con más de 20 años en la producción de hortalizas en el oeste de Maine y 12 temporadas en la cría de pavos. Con 12 años como atleta de fuerza, Cynthia también es Entrenadora Personal Certificada y Masajista Terapéutica Licenciada. Labor-Movement, fundada en 2020, se enfoca en educar a agricultores y trabajadores agrícolas en la mecánica corporal y el entrenamiento de patrones de movimiento, con el objetivo de prevenir lesiones y promover la longevidad en sus carreras laborales. Solo en 2024, Cynthia trabajó con más de 900 agricultores en 18 estados y Columbia Británica.
