Free School for Farmworkers presents: Seed Saving Basics with Amirah Mitchell of Sistah Seeds

Seeds are time capsules. Memories are imprinted within each - the big storm that came through when nobody expected it, the tired hands that tended the parent plant, lovingly or hastily pruning and trellising. When that seed is grown out, it brings all of those memories to life from a year, 5 years, even hundreds of years ago. Seeds are our connection to the past and the future. Seeds are counting on us to try again, offering promises of security and nourishment that is time immemorial.

When you grow a crop to seed, you get to witness its entire life cycle and the legacy it leaves. The connection is powerful. Yet within production farming, especially under capitalism, many of us do not have the option to save seeds and take part in this process. Production farming stops the crop at the fruit stage for consumption and sale. Especially as farmworkers, we often do not have access to spots on the farm to save seeds, or even have the time or energy to try...but we want to! The skill and process of seed saving is a subject that many farmworkers have shared that they want to learn...so here it is!

Join us at our upcoming Free School teach-in where Amirah Mitchell of Sistah Seeds will lead us through the Basics of Seed Saving. Come prepared to learn about plant botany, characteristics and considerations across seed types (like wet seeds versus dry seeds), and how to incorporate seed saving into your season, whether it’s on your porch or on the farm. We will also hear from farmworkers, Alé Lomanto and Tiana Suazo, who are saving and re-matriating seeds, and discuss seed sovereignty on stolen land and as farmworkers with tenuous land access.

About our speakers:

Amirah Mitchell is a farmer, seedkeeper and community educator who has worked in agriculture and food justice since 2007. She holds a B.S. in Horticulture from Temple University, studied agriculture in Brazil and Panama, and has farmed in Massachusetts, Georgia and Pennsylvania. She gives community workshops on seed-keeping and agroecology. In 2021, Amirah founded Sistah Seeds to connect black and brown growers to our culturally-important seeds. Sistah Seeds is one of a small but growing number of black-owned seed businesses in the U.S., changing the landscape of the seed industry. Together, we are part of a multi-ethnic, multi-national movement of farmers and seed-keepers, working to preserve our heritage and create a strong agricultural future for our communities.

Tiana Suazo (Taos and Jemez Pueblos) is an advocate for Indigenous food sovereignty and community resilience. She holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Fort Lewis College and has a background in nonprofit leadership, farm operations, and farmers market management. Tiana supports Indigenous growers through food safety training, resource connection, and cultural preservation, bridging traditional knowledge with modern food systems.

Alé Lomanto is a first-generation Andean farmworker and seedkeeper growing in Philadelphia / Lenapehoking. They work to adapt plants from the high Andean region to their local climate with the intention of breeding climate-resilient food crops. Alé looks to these plants as a way to offer healing and cultural preservation in the face of displacement and disconnect.

Las semillas son cápsulas del tiempo. En cada una quedan memorias guardadas: la gran tormenta que llegó sin aviso, las manos cansadas que cuidaron la planta madre, podándola y entutorándola con amor o con prisa. Cuando esa semilla vuelve a germinar, revive todos esos recuerdos de hace un año, cinco años o incluso cientos de años. Las semillas son nuestre vínculo con el pasado y el futuro. Las semillas confían en nosotres para intentarlo una vez más, ofreciéndonos promesas de seguridad y sustento que trascienden el tiempo.

Cuando cultivas una cosecha para producir semillas, puedes ser testigue de todo su ciclo de vida y del legado que deja. La conexión es poderosa. Sin embargo, dentro de la agricultura de producción, especialmente bajo el capitalismo, muches de nosotres no tenemos la opción de guardar semillas y participar en este proceso. La agricultura de producción detiene el ciclo de la planta en la etapa del fruto, para consumo y venta.
