Free Wednesday workshops for inner northern Melbourne literacy teachers
Event description
Free workshops for literacy lead or literacy intervention teachers from government schools in the Cities of Darebin, Melbourne, Merri-Bek or Yarra. A maximum of 12 teachers per session will discuss:
Using embedded picture mnemonic, grapheme and affix tiles to build and change words, and help students learn sound-letter relationships and phonemic awareness, understand word structure and make relevant juncture changes when adding prefixes/suffixes.
Card games for high repetition practice of phonics targets, adding suffixes, flexing sounds (e.g. a/atom v/s a/apron) and breaking up polysyllable words. Play the games and consider who might use them.
Finding high-quality, affordable decodable texts to match school phonics teaching sequences, using decodable book selectors and our extensive library, see https://youtu.be/eE3nbtH84A8?si=hJod6-I_l_2bkZ6y
Take home a goodie bag of resources at the end of the session. Go for afternoon tea/a drink with colleagues at a local cafe/pub afterwards if you like, networking is great.
These sessions would normally cost $90 + GST, but are free because Spelfabet's application to become a social enterprise requires us to quantify recent social benefit provided, and that's hard to do when it's lots of small, different things.
