Description

Are our beliefs really up to us?

We often think of ourselves as free because we can make choices: what to do, what to say, where to go, who to spend time with, and what kind of life to pursue. But belief is trickier. Can we simply choose what we believe?

Or are our beliefs shaped by evidence, upbringing, emotion, culture, habit, fear, hope, and the people around us?

In this Bacchus Marsh Philosophy Club session, we’ll ask:

How free are we in what we choose to believe?

Together, we’ll explore questions such as:

  • Can we choose our beliefs, or do they happen to us?

  • What makes a belief reasonable?

  • Are we responsible for what we believe?

  • How do fear, hope, identity, and belonging shape belief?

  • When should we change our minds?

As always, no prior knowledge of philosophy is needed. The session will be friendly, structured, and discussion-based. We are not here to win the argument — we are here to explore the question together.

Come along if you enjoy good questions, thoughtful conversation, and hearing how other people see the world.
