FREEDOM FLY | Contemporary Jazz & Poetry — Siwei Wong & Dominic Nguyen
Description
What happens when jazz becomes a language, rather than a genre?
On 26 September, FREEDOM FLY comes to acidity. for an intimate evening of contemporary jazz, poetry, songwriting and improvisation.
Led by Melbourne-based musician, composer and songwriter Siwei Wong, FREEDOM FLY moves freely between musical forms. Working across piano, harp, voice and composition, Siwei draws from jazz without allowing the genre to define the limits of her music.
Her work brings together lyrical songwriting, poetry, rich harmonic language and spontaneous musical interaction. Jazz remains deeply rooted in the music — particularly through one of its most fundamental ideas: improvisation.
For this performance, Siwei is joined by Dominic Nguyen. Together they explore the space between composition and spontaneity: music that has been written, music that develops through conversation, and music that can only exist in the moment it is played.
FREEDOM FLY has appeared as part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, with Siwei developing a distinctive musical language that moves between intimate ballads, spiritual grooves and open improvisation.
This is not an attempt to redefine what jazz should be. It is an exploration of another side of jazz — personal, poetic and deeply connected to the act of creating in the moment.
