FREEDOM IS BEAUTIFUL: An evening with Farhad Bandesh In conversation with Arnold Zable

Hosted by Rural Australians for Refugees Castlemaine. Supported by The Coolroom

Rural Australians for Refugees Castlemaine presents an evening with artist and activist Farhad Bandesh who be in conversation with writer Arnold Zable. A screening of the documentary Freedom is Beautiful will be followed by a Q&A. Bandesh Wine & Spirits will be selling their packaged products during the evening.

Farhad Bandesh is a Kurdish artist, activist, musician and winemaker. He was unjustly imprisoned for nearly 8 years, first on Manus Island, then in Melbourne in Australian Immigration Prison Camps. He became a leader of the resistance within the prisons and used music, art and peaceful protest to show people what was being done to children, women and men under Australia's harsh policies.

Arnold Zable, a much loved Australian writer, novelist, storyteller and human rights advocate met Farhad whilst imprisoned. They continue a beautiful friendship to this day.

Freedom Is Beautiful is the story of Farhad Bandesh and Mostafa Azimitabar, two Kurdish men who sought asylum and protection in 2013. Instead of safety they were exposed to cruel and inhumane treatment. The documentary shows how they are currently building a life for themselves in Australia and how they use their art and music for their survival and resistance and to tell the story of them and others who were harmed by Australian policies.
