    Event description

The native forest at Staveley Camp is under threat from invasive weeds and we need your help to save it.

The Staveley Camp Forest is one of the few remaining remnants of native alluvial plain forests in the Mid-Canterbury foothills, making it of significant ecological value. Unfortunately, the forest was previously degraded by early grazing and exposure to invasive plant species.

The community has been making big efforts to restore the forest to its native state, including full-perimeter fencing, weed removal, and trapping of possums and other pests.

One of the biggest challenges facing the forest is the number of invasive plants, many of which are altering its fundamental structure.

We need your help to remove these invaders and restore the forest’s natural beauty and ecological health. Restoring the Staveley Camp Forest will benefit the local biodiversity and play an important role in the health of the wider ecosystem. By participating in this 'Friday in the Forest' you can make a valuable contribution to the environment and have a great time while doing it!

Note: All tools, gloves & eye protection will be provided but you may wish to bring your own. Please remember layers, rain coats, sun hat, a water bottle and your lunch. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground can be uneven.

It's Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme this year is: Community is... what we create together. Come and find out how community is forming as people of all ages come together to give back to nature and help protect this beautiful place.

Make the most of this fantastic opportunity to learn more about native forest protection and help make this gorgeous forest a thriving native sanctuary! If you can't stay the whole time, just stay for the period that suits you, even one hour will be a big help.

This is one of five events Keep Learning Mid Canterbury is running focusing on the 5 Ways to Wellbeing, during Mental Health Awareness Week. This one is focused on giving your time & giving back to nature, but you'll also connect with others, be active as you wrangle weeds, take notice of beauty around you and keep learning about native forest protection.
