Beyond Zionist Shabbat with Rabbi Cat Zavis

How can we enact Judaism in solidarity with Palestinians? How can we build a synagogue beyond walls?

Join us for a week-end of Shabbat, of prayer and rest, with Rabbi Cat Zavis from Beyt Tikkun, based in Berkeley, California. She’s coming to Sydney to share with us the experience of a Shabbat Beyond Zionism. 

To our knowledge, not one Rabbi in Australia has spoken out publicly against Israel's actions in Gaza. This is not only extremely sad, it is an outrage. For those of us who care about the plight of Palestinians, human rights and crimes against humanity, it is urgently necessary to learn to enact Judaism beyond that practiced by the mainstream Jewish organisations currently in Australia.  

Event is open to all Jews and allies who share our values and understand their urgency today.  

What: Friday Night from 6pm in Glebe: You are invited to a musical and meditative service followed by a casual, conversational, and tasty dinner.

Saturday Morning from 10am in Rushcutters Bay: You are invited to a Saturday morning Torah reading and service followed by a casual lunch in the sun by the water.

Saturday Afternoon from 2pm in Rushcutters Bay: You are invited to Rest as Resistance: Rest, Conversation and Support for Activists.

Food: Gf, vegan

Cost: Suggested $100 or $50 low income or whatever works for you. All funds go to support Rabbi Cat’s trip from Berkeley. For more on why this costs money, please see our questions + answers. 10% of money gathered goes to mutual aid in Palestine.

This will be a seated event and capacity is limited. Location details will be provided after registration. If you register and then can no longer attend, please let us know via Humanitix (click “manage order” in your confirmation email). 

Ticketing and donations

Standard paid tickets ($100, $50 low income) will help us cover the costs of hall hires and insurance ($1000) and Rabbi Cat’s airline tickets ($2000) and an Honorarium for Rabbi Cat ($1000) There is an option to pay more than $100 to sponsor an attendee in financial need. NOTAFLOF (no one turned away for lack of funds); if you cannot afford $50 please send an email and we will sort it out. Children attend free. Any funds raised in excess of our requirements for this event, and donations in the donation section, will be donated to APAN (Australia Palestine Advocacy Network). 

Food and beverages

If you want and are able to, please bring a plate for the potluck lunch and dinner). All food must be vegan or vegetarian.

Accessibility 

Please let us know your accessibility needs in your registration and we will do our best to accommodate them. 

The venue has an at-grade entry and accessible toilet facilities. 

The venues are close to a train station and multiple bus routes. Timed street parking is available nearby (not sufficient for the length of the event without moving your car), with fewer parking restrictions a little further away. If transportation is an accessibility barrier for you, please let us know and we will try to facilitate a carpooling arrangement though this cannot be guaranteed.
