With our thrilling debut program, Caesura Ensemble will take you to the sky as we explore incredible music that provides us with a glimpse into what it means to ascend to a heavenly realm.
We will open with 'but the sky is surely open': a colourful and dynamic work for chamber orchestra by emerging Australian composer Paul Nicolaou. 'but the sky is surely open' follows the journey of a boy named Icarus, son of Daedalus, from Ancident Greece. After obtaining the ability to fly, Icarus finds a sense of freedom in escaping the bounadries of the Earth. He becomes infatuated with this new sensation: defying the limits of man.
Following this will be a performance of Gustav Mahler's transcendental fourth symphony, arranged by Iain Farrington for chamber orchestra, featuring young soprano talent Hannah Burton in the iconic final movement. Mahler's fourth symphony is a sublime domain of melody, narrative, and orchestral colour, which you can experience like never before in the beautifully intimate and relaxed space of Church Street Studios in Camperdown.
Join us on a journey through these masterpieces as we travel through landscapes of infinity and meet Gods and Devils, and immerse ourselves in the kaleidoscope of the human experience.
