From Scraps to Soil

A practical, hands-on workshop to learn the basics of composting with Dr. Ernie Harbott from Compost Culture. Learn the differences between hot and cold composting, what materials to include, how to manage it and how to use it!

We will also delve into composting small animal carcases and Amanda from Mid-Lachlan Landcare will give us a run down of what she learnt from their recent carp-composting workshop as part of their Carp Muster in Canowindra.

The day will be held at the incredible Glen Donald Estate, farm experience hosts and producers of award-winning olive oils and fine produce.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided (it's not worms, we promise!)

What to bring:

• Water bottle

• Chair

• Hat and clothes you don't mind getting dirty

• Gardening gloves

• Any composting materials eg. food scraps, straw, dry leaves, newspaper/brown cardboard, lawn clippings

About the presenter:

Dr Ernie Harbott was destined to be a professional composter. After earning Science degrees in Chemistry (Honours) and Environmental Science, a PhD in Biogeochemistry and a Diploma of Education, she kicked around as a teacher, a water chemist, and a composter.

A decade ago Ernie co-conspired a Community Garden in Singleton to get her local community composting and growing their own food. She soon became a Master Composter, Certified Soil Food Web Microscopist and self taught soil ecologist.

After watching “Kiss the Ground” four years ago, Ernie could no longer do nothing about the degeneration of soils. She became a soil advocate by starting a Facebook Group Soil Sisters Singleton to connect community through soil regeneration, sustainability, and self care. With the simple concepts of “Baby Steps” and “one person can make a difference”, the single mother of two tiny ecowarriors is determined to prove that you can set an example and make a living doing what matters and what you love. Her budding business Compost Culture shares a love of learning how to compost with the endgame of getting everyone eating nutrient dense food from healthy soils.
