From Whitlam to Now: Legislating Human Rights
Event description
Everyone benefits when human rights are at the heart of our laws, so why hasn’t a Human Rights Act already been placed into law?
A new report on legislating a Human Rights Act from the Whitlam Government’s effort to the present, commissioned by the Human Rights Law Centre and Whitlam Institute, and co-authored by Professor Azadeh Dastyari and Cassandra LeGood, will help show how misinformation and disinformation over decades has been used to deny the community the benefits of a Human Rights Act.
The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG, former High Court Justice and lifelong advocate for human rights, will officially launch the report and reflect on the legacy of Gough Whitlam’s vision for rights protection, and the ongoing national debate on a federal Human Rights Act.
It will also provide the lessons from the past so that supporters and decision makers today can learn and apply this hard won knowledge of how opponents use fear and division so that this once in a decade opportunity becomes a reality.
