Free School for Farmworkers Presents: Farming in an Ableist Society.

As farmers, we know this job can be grueling on our bodies. Job descriptions clearly state that we must be able to work in all weather conditions, put in 10 to 12 hour days, lift 50 pounds, squat, pull, run, jump, build a business with our physical bodies with expectations to smile, socialize, and complete cognitively demanding tasks. But what if that is not physically possible for us and we still want to farm? Is there room for us? Farming has not made any apologies for being an ableist and inaccessible field, but here at Free School we are asking some questions and seeking some solutions.

What we understand is: it’s the environment we build that creates a physically and socially inaccessible space - the problem is not the person who has a disability.

Join us for this important Free School teach-in led by accessibility and inclusion consultant, Kristie Cabrera, where we will discuss the realities of farming in an ableist society. Some questions at the heart of this conversation are: Where is there opportunity to create more inclusion and access in farms? Who has the responsibility to support this? Where are the barriers of inaccessibility?

We will also talk about strategies to self-manage and take care of our fellow crew members navigating accessibility issues on farms and how everyone can support disability justice on farms. We’ll hear from farmworkers who have struggled and coped with these challenges in a farm setting and also hold space for others who want to share.

Speaker Bios:

Kristie (they/them) is a queer and disabled accessibility and inclusivity consultant. They primarily guide nature and food spaces in understanding and implementing accessibility and inclusion practices. Kristie's work is grounded in disability justice and focuses on gradually, yet intentionally, unpacking ableism in both physical and social spaces, as well as within our relationships. Mercedes (she/her) is an obscenely neurodivergent Diasporican farm-worker / ecologist / horticulture technician rooted in the land of the Kaw Nation in the Central Great Plains region of the U.S. Through years of work in agriculture, plant-science, and ecology - including six years as a farm-worker - Mercedes is forever in the process of learning how to navigate the complex beast of the American agriculture industry. This is done through a lens informed by the experiences of chronic illness, indigenous displacement, and generational poverty, and as such, her experience of agricultural labor has been both deeply personal and deeply political.

Sebastian (he/they) is a farmer, facilitator, and food systems professional with a strong commitment to sustainable practices and community empowerment. Passionate about the intersection of food sovereignty and social justice, he works to advance movements that address the eradication of poverty and center equity for marginalized communities. With a deep understanding of food systems, Sebastian seeks to create lasting change by fostering inclusive, resilient, and fair food systems for all.

Escuela Libre para Trabajadores Agrícolas presenta: La Agricultura en una Sociedad Capacitista.

Como trabajadores agrícolas, sabemos que este trabajo puede ser muy agotador para nuestres cuerpos. Las descripciones de trabajo claramente indican que debemos ser capaces de trabajar en todo tipo de condiciones climáticas, hacer jornadas de 10 a 12 horas, levantar 50 libras, agacharnos, tirar, correr, saltar y construir un negocio con nuestres cuerpos físicos con expectativas de sonreír, socializar y realizar tareas que requieren un alto nivel cognitivo. Pero, ¿qué pasa si eso no es físicamente posible para nosotres y aún queremos dedicarnos a la agricultura? ¿Hay espacio para nosotres? La agricultura no ha ofrecido disculpas por ser un campo capacitista e inaccesible, pero aquí, en la Escuela Libre, estamos planteando algunas preguntas y buscando soluciones.

Lo que entendemos es esto: es el entorno que construimos lo que crea un espacio físico y socialmente inaccesible; el problema no es la persona que tiene una discapacidad.

Únete a este importante diálogo de la Escuela Libre, dirigido por le consultore en accesibilidad e inclusión Kristie Cabrera, donde discutiremos las realidades de trabajar en la agricultura dentro de una sociedad capacitista.
