What are the laws of war and how do they protect people impacted by conflict?

The Fundamentals of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a three-hour introductory course, providing participants with a broad overview of IHL and its intrinsic link to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Led by expert academics and legal practitioners, this course gives an accessible, yet comprehensive, introduction to the laws of war. It covers:

the history of IHL and the development and essential content of the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols;
the role of the International Committee of the Red Cross in times of armed conflict
Red Cross' Fundamental Principles and protective emblems;
how the military applies the law; and,
the mechanisms available when the law is breached.

The course will also feature a special presentation: 'Corporate risk and responsibility under international humanitarian law', which will engage with the protections and responsibilities for businesses under IHL, and what corporate actors can do to respond to the risks that arise in armed conflict settings.
