    Event description

Fundamentals of Neurodiversity Affirming Practice will be presented by Sonny Jane Wise (they/them), a multiply neurodivergent, queer and disabled public speaker, advocate and author. They present from a professional and lived experience perspective, and will cover topics including:

    • Language (terminology, person vs identity first, deficit vs strengths based)
    • Origins of neurodiversity as a social justice movement
    • The Neurodiversity Affirming Paradigm
    • Principles of Neurodiversity Affirming Practice
    • Applications in professional practice

This presentation is suitable for anyone interested in Neurodivergence and supporting Neurodiverse individuals in any professional context. It will be particularly aimed at helping professions interacting directly with people such as healthcare, education, law and public service. Students are also strongly encouraged to attend.

The formal part of the event from 6 - 8pm will primarily be Sonny's presentation, with some opportunity for questions and facilitated discussion. Time and space will be available for networking after the event if desired from 8 - 9pm.

Tickets are $10 (inclusive of booking fee). We are hoping for a big turnout, and once all event costs are covered, any remaining funds will be donated to the Drop In Care Space, a lived experience and volunteer led community drop-in centre for adults who identify as LGBTQIA+, disabled or neurodivergent including Autistic, ADHD or mental health conditions. If the cost is a barrier to your attendance, please contact us to discuss.

This event is held on the unceded lands of the Kaurna people. We pay our respects to them, and to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout Australia, who we recognise as the Traditional Owners of this land.

This event will be fully accessible, including access for people using a wheelchair or other mobility aid; use of a hearing loop; and a virtual live stream. If you have any concerns about accessibility or would like more information about the venue, please contact us directly.
