A practical talk on building intentional portfolio work with models, agencies, creatives and emerging talent.

Most photographers are not really building a portfolio.

They are collecting random shoots.

A nice portrait here. A model test there. A creative idea that sort of worked. A few images they like, but no clear thread connecting them, no obvious direction, and no real sense of what kind of work they want to be hired for.

That becomes a problem quickly.

If your portfolio does not clearly show what you can do, who you want to work with, and what kind of shoots you are trying to attract, it is not doing the job you think it is.

In this two-hour session, Oliver Minnett breaks down how to approach portfolio work properly: what it is actually for, how to pitch it to models, agencies, makeup artists and stylists, how to build a small team, how to create a brief, and how to make the shoot useful for everyone involved.

This is not about throwing a model in front of the camera and hoping something good happens.

It is about building shoots with intention.

Oliver will cover the difference between clean model tests, creative editorials, commercial portfolio work and personal projects, and how each one serves a different purpose. He will also look at what agencies tend to need from photographers, how to balance personal style with commercial usefulness, and why the best portfolio work usually sits somewhere between taste, restraint and clarity.

Supported by Profoto, this workshop will also look at simple lighting and practical workflow for portfolio shoots. The goal is not to overcomplicate the process, but to show how controlled light, clear direction and a well-built brief can make your work feel more polished, consistent and usable.

In the final hour, Oliver will walk through how he builds a shoot for his own book, from the idea and visual direction through to moodboards, talent, makeup, styling, sample pulls, lighting choices, direction and final execution. This will be a practical breakdown of how a portfolio shoot is actually put together, not just in theory, but in the real world.

Everyone will leave with a shoot brief they can take away and use to approach models, makeup artists, stylists, agencies or other creatives.

This is the second session in the series, following Working With Talent, and leads into the next workshop, Shooting Your First Campaign.

If the first session is about learning how to work with people properly, this one is about learning how to turn that into real shoots.

Who it’s for

This talk is for photographers and videographers who want to create stronger portfolio work with people.

It is especially useful if you shoot portraits, fashion, swimwear, editorial, music, artists, content, personal branding, model tests or small commercial jobs, and want your work to feel more intentional.

Beginners will get a clear framework for building shoots properly, instead of guessing their way through outreach, moodboards and direction.

More experienced photographers will get a sharper way to think about their portfolio, what it is communicating, and whether the work they are making is actually helping them move toward the jobs they want.

If you have ever wondered how to pitch a shoot, how to get a model, MUA or stylist involved, how to make your ideas feel more professional, or why your portfolio still feels a bit scattered, this is for you.

What you’ll walk away with

You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how to build portfolio shoots from the ground up: idea, brief, pitch, team, lighting, direction, workflow and follow-through.

You’ll also walk away with a practical shoot brief you can use to approach models, makeup artists, stylists, agencies and creatives after the session.

This is designed to help you stop waiting for permission and start building the kind of work you actually want to be known for.
