    The Teachers

Learn the fundamental skills of visual arts from trained, professional artists. Danny Stanley has had an art career spanning over a decade, where he has worked professionally within comics, murals, animation, photography and more. This broad ranging experience and skillset, combined with a similar amount of time devoted to teaching these skills to a wide variety of adults and children, makes Danny a highly sought after art teacher within the region. Taking occasional classes as well, is his partner Sophie Honess, equally as respected a local professional artist and educator, specialising more-so in abstract design, and Gomeroi and European weaving.

Live demonstrations from recent classes by Danny.

    The Course

Danny was trained at Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney, one of the oldest and most respected art schools in the country. By default, new students of Tamworth Art Academy will move through a course structure similar to that at Julian Ashtons. This is based on growing in skills and understanding relating to realistic drawing and painting skills. Part of this structure is an understanding between student and teacher of the level of the student's skills and, in turn, feedback, exercises and demonstrations which are helpful at their current level of understanding and learning style. Where Danny differs to Julian Ashtons in his approach, is his ability and willingness to also teach students skills from the other fields he has worked professionally within the arts industry, and has taught over the years. Students with a particular interest in cartooning, animation, painting, etc. will find a course which is tailor made for them. In addition to a focus on skills-building, this course also gives students a chance to unwind, and develop the ability to focus on artistic practice. The Tamworth Community Centre's vintage high ceilings and access to a green courtyard, as well as comfortable air-conditioning and kitchenette, make it the ideal place to step away from screens and distractions and into creativity.

    Students

This course is open to anybody aged over 14. Anybody at all in the world can gain skills in art with a bit of time and effort, and we welcome all ages, finding this mix of ages to be something that everybody enjoys. This course will be of particular interest to teenagers, who are in the most prime time of their lives for learning and absorbing artistic skills and theory. We know that high school can be a difficult and alienating time for teenagers, particularly kids on the artier and more sensitive side. We take pride in running a class without any of the pressures of high school, grading and social expectations. We are thoroughly inclusive of all genders, LGBT community members, cultural backgrounds and anything else. We provide a gentle, friendly environment which gently encourages students to create artwork they enjoy and are proud of, and to familiarise themselves with always gently pushing themselves and their skills.
