Funeral Director sheds light on a different Covid story to protect New Zealanders

During Covid, he was on the National Board of the Funeral Directors Association, and he had direct access to the mortality statistics of New Zealanders. He will shed light on a different story from the media spin we heard, along with insights from being on the MoH and Department of Government and Prime Minister joint meetings.

Andrew will relate some lovely stories from his industry of how, during Covid, funeral professionals went above and beyond what was required by pushing the boundaries with Kiwi innovation to add additional health protection systems to keep New Zealanders safe.

About the Speaker: Andrew Malcolm

Managing Director of Kāpiti Coast Funeral Home

A Funeral Director of 39 years, Andrew’s career not only includes business, but also National Tutor of Funeral Services, five years on the Industry ITO, four years as executive member of NZEA, Kāpiti College Board of Trustees and most recently, two years as National Chair of New Zealand Independent Funeral Directors Association, and current National Board Member of the Funeral Directors Association, and incoming National Chair.

Andrew’s many national roles have only been possible through a successful funeral home that found its routes in a time of extreme hardship. At the age of 27 Andrew began his two-year part time national tutor role and was approached to manage a small struggling owner-operator Kāpiti based funeral home.

Andrew and wife Merryn have been in business in Kāpiti for 30 years and have expanded the business to two chapels, a crematorium, catering company, monumental company, and, in the middle of the first year of the Covid pandemic, opened the ‘Loss & Grief Centre’ as a Charitable Trust.
